Radial Proper Digital Nerve of the Index Finger

nervus digitalis palmaris proprius radialis indicis

The radial proper digital nerve of the index finger is a branch of the first common palmar digital nerve (from the median nerve), supplying the radial half of the index finger palmar surface. It is the primary sensory nerve of the key pinch surface.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The radial index digital nerve provides sensation to the critical key pinch surface between the index finger and thumb. Its injury from ring avulsion or saw injuries produces sensory loss on the most discriminating tactile surface of the hand. Digital nerve repair or grafting is urgent for this nerve given its functional importance. It is one of the targets in digital nerve fascicular mapping during hand replantation.

Radial Index Digital Nerve Injury in Ring Avulsion

Loss of sensory supply to the key pinch surface from radial index digital nerve disruption in ring avulsion injuries, requiring microsurgical repair or nerve grafting for functional restoration.
