Nerve to Vastus Intermedius

nervus musculi vasti intermedii

Motor branches of the femoral nerve supplying vastus intermedius, arising from the deep division of the femoral nerve and entering the muscle on its superficial surface. The nerve to vastus intermedius also supplies the articularis genu via a descending branch.

Region: Thigh
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The nerve to vastus intermedius is the shared motor supply for vastus intermedius and articularis genu. Its assessment requires EMG of the vastus intermedius belly, distinct from the overlying rectus femoris. In complete femoral nerve palsy, recovery of vastus intermedius function (assessed by deep thigh EMG) indicates regeneration through the deep femoral division and predicts recovery of knee extension strength.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Deep Femoral Division Palsy

Selective damage to the deep femoral nerve division producing vastus intermedius and articularis genu weakness alongside vastus lateralis involvement, causing significant knee extension weakness even with partial rectus femoris preservation.
