Nerve to Infraspinatus

nervus musculi infraspinati

The nerve to infraspinatus branches from the suprascapular nerve at the spinoglenoid notch, descending to supply the infraspinatus muscle. It is the most distal branch of the suprascapular nerve and may be selectively compressed by a spinoglenoid notch ganglion cyst.

Region: Shoulder
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Selective infraspinatus denervation from spinoglenoid notch ganglion cyst produces isolated infraspinatus atrophy with preserved supraspinatus function, distinguishing it from proximal suprascapular neuropathy at the suprascapular notch which affects both muscles. MRI demonstrates selective infraspinatus atrophy. Aspiration of the spinoglenoid ganglion or suprascapular nerve decompression at the notch restores function.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Spinoglenoid Notch Ganglion with Infraspinatus Palsy

Selective infraspinatus denervation from a ganglion cyst compressing the nerve to infraspinatus at the spinoglenoid notch, producing isolated infraspinatus wasting confirmed by EMG and treated by ganglion aspiration or arthroscopic decompression.
