Nerve to Flexor Digitorum Brevis

nervus musculi flexoris digitorum brevis

A branch of the medial plantar nerve supplying the flexor digitorum brevis muscle on the plantar foot. It branches from the medial plantar nerve as it passes deep to the abductor hallucis into the plantar foot, entering FDB on its deep surface.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The nerve to FDB is at risk during plantar fascia release and medial plantar nerve decompression. Its injury produces weakness of lesser toe PIP flexion. Baxter's neuropathy (inferior calcaneal nerve entrapment) is distinct from nerve to FDB injury but may coexist in medial heel pain syndromes. EMG assessment of FDB is performed in cases of suspected medial plantar neuropathy.

Common Injuries & Conditions

FDB Denervation in Medial Plantar Neuropathy

Weakness of lesser toe PIP flexion from FDB denervation in medial plantar nerve injury or tarsal tunnel syndrome, confirmed by EMG and managed by nerve decompression.
