Nerve to Extensor Digitorum Brevis

nervus musculi extensoris digitorum brevis

A terminal motor branch of the deep peroneal nerve supplying the extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis on the dorsal foot. It branches from the deep peroneal nerve as it crosses the ankle and enters the EDB muscle on its deep surface. EDB innervation is the only intrinsic dorsal foot motor supply.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The nerve to EDB is the distal motor branch assessed in deep peroneal nerve injury at the foot level. Selective EDB atrophy with intact anterior compartment function indicates a distal deep peroneal nerve lesion (anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome). Dorsal foot ganglion cysts and osteophytes from the talonavicular or cuneocuboid joints compress this nerve. EDB EMG is included in electrodiagnostic studies of deep peroneal neuropathy.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Anterior Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Deep peroneal nerve compression under the inferior extensor retinaculum producing EDB atrophy and dorsal foot numbness in the first web space, caused by tight footwear, ganglion, or osteophytes.
