Nerve to Articularis Cubiti

nervus musculi articularis cubiti

A small branch of the radial nerve or its branch to the medial head of triceps supplying the articularis cubiti — the small muscle that retracts the posterior elbow capsule during extension. It ensures the capsule does not impinge in the olecranon fossa.

Region: Upper Arm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The nerve to articularis cubiti is rarely injured in isolation but may be affected in spiral groove radial nerve palsy, producing subtle loss of posterior capsule retraction. Its denervation contributes to posterior elbow capsular adhesion after elbow surgery or prolonged immobilisation. It is of interest in elbow arthroplasty where posterior capsule management affects post-operative range of motion.

Articularis Cubiti Denervation in Elbow Stiffness

Loss of articularis cubiti motor supply contributing to posterior capsule adhesion and elbow extension deficit after spiral groove radial nerve injury or prolonged elbow immobilisation.
