Pronator Teres Ulnar Head

caput ulnare m. pronatoris teretis

The ulnar head arises from the coronoid and forms the deep boundary of the inter-head interval through which the median nerve passes. It is smaller than the humeral head.

Nerve: Median nerve (C6, C7) Blood Supply: Ulnar artery Region: Forearm
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginCoronoid process of the ulna — medial aspect
InsertionLateral radius — merges with the humeral head at the pronator tubercle
Nerve SupplyMedian nerve (C6, C7)
Blood SupplyUlnar artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsContributes to forearm pronation; The ulnar head is the medial limb of the nerve passage interval
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The ulnar head is the deep wall of the pronator teres tunnel. In pronator syndrome surgery, the fibrous arch at the deep surface of the ulnar head is released. Forearm fractures near the coronoid may avulse the ulnar head and alter the pronation force.

Palpation

Not separately palpable from the humeral head.

Ulnar Head Fibrous Arch in Pronator Syndrome

Fibrous arch at the deep surface of the ulnar head forming one of the potential compression sites for the median nerve in the pronator tunnel.
