musculus procerus detail

The procerus produces horizontal wrinkles at the nasal root and depresses the medial brow. It is an important contributing muscle to the glabellar complex, acting with corrugator supercilii and depressor supercilii to produce the angry/stern expression.

Function & Actions

ActionsDepresses the medial eyebrow; Produces horizontal nasal root wrinkles — "bunny lines" at the nasal root
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Procerus is included in the glabellar botulinum injection complex — omitting the procerus in glabellar treatment leaves horizontal nasal root lines that persist. The procerus is also injected for nasal root bunny lines. In endoscopic brow lift, the procerus is divided to permanently reduce glabellar wrinkling.

Palpation

Produces horizontal lines at the nasal root during brow depression or squinting.

Procerus Contribution to Glabellar Complex

Procerus treatment as part of complete glabellar botulinum injection protocol to address both vertical (corrugator) and horizontal (procerus) glabellar/nasal root lines.
