musculus flexor digiti minimi brevis manus detail

FDM is the central hypothenar muscle. Its hook of hamate origin makes it the muscle most at risk in hook of hamate fractures, producing acute hypothenar pain on avulsion.

Nerve: Deep branch of ulnar nerve (C8, T1) Blood Supply: Ulnar artery Region: Hand & Wrist

Function & Actions

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Hamate hook fractures in golfers and baseball players avulse the FDM origin. Excision of the fractured hook with FDM repair restores function. FDM pain is reproduced by the hook of hamate fracture test.

Palpation

Palpable as the central hypothenar bulk during resisted little finger MCP flexion.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

FDM Origin Avulsion in Hook of Hamate Fracture

FDM detachment from a fractured hook producing hypothenar pain and grip weakness, managed by hook excision and FDM reattachment.
