Flexor Digitorum Superficialis Humeral Head

caput humerale m. flexoris digitorum superficialis

The humero-ulnar head arises from the medial epicondyle and coronoid and is the dominant head in mass flexion, supplying ring and little finger slips.

Nerve: Median nerve (C7, C8, T1) Blood Supply: Ulnar artery Region: Forearm
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginMedial epicondyle (common flexor origin) and ulnar coronoid process
InsertionMiddle phalanges of ring and little fingers predominantly
Nerve SupplyMedian nerve (C7, C8, T1)
Blood SupplyUlnar artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsFlexes the PIP joints of ring and little fingers; Assists wrist flexion
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The humeral head FDS origin at the common flexor tendon is involved in medial epicondylitis. In elbow UCL reconstruction, the common flexor origin is split to access the medial joint.

Palpation

Tenderness at the medial epicondyle during resisted wrist flexion.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Humeral Head FDS Strain in Medial Epicondylitis

Microtearing of the FDS humeral head origin producing golfer's elbow pain, managed by eccentric loading and medial epicondyle injection.
