EDB is a small dorsal foot muscle deep to the EDL tendons. The hallux slip (EHB) is often mistaken for a ganglion or mass over the tarsal sinus.
| Origin | Dorsolateral calcaneus — distal to the sinus tarsi |
|---|---|
| Insertion | Dorsal expansion of toes 2-4 (the medial head — EHB — to the hallux) |
| Nerve Supply | Deep peroneal nerve (L5, S1) |
| Blood Supply | Lateral tarsal artery from dorsalis pedis |
| Actions | Extends the MTP joints of the second through fourth toes; The medial head (EHB) extends the hallux MTP |

EDB prominence over the sinus tarsi is a common cause of apparent dorsal foot mass. EDB weakness in common peroneal palsy is a sensitive indicator of deep peroneal branch involvement.
Visible and palpable on dorsolateral foot proximal to MTP joints during resisted toe extension.
Hypertrophied EDB over the sinus tarsi producing a dorsal foot mass, confirmed by ultrasound.
