Extensor Digitorum Brevis Detail

musculus extensor digitorum brevis detail

EDB is a small dorsal foot muscle deep to the EDL tendons. The hallux slip (EHB) is often mistaken for a ganglion or mass over the tarsal sinus.

Nerve: Deep peroneal nerve (L5, S1) Blood Supply: Lateral tarsal artery from dorsalis pedis Region: Foot & Ankle
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginDorsolateral calcaneus — distal to the sinus tarsi
InsertionDorsal expansion of toes 2-4 (the medial head — EHB — to the hallux)
Nerve SupplyDeep peroneal nerve (L5, S1)
Blood SupplyLateral tarsal artery from dorsalis pedis
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsExtends the MTP joints of the second through fourth toes; The medial head (EHB) extends the hallux MTP
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

EDB prominence over the sinus tarsi is a common cause of apparent dorsal foot mass. EDB weakness in common peroneal palsy is a sensitive indicator of deep peroneal branch involvement.

Palpation

Visible and palpable on dorsolateral foot proximal to MTP joints during resisted toe extension.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

EDB Prominence Mimicking Dorsal Foot Ganglion

Hypertrophied EDB over the sinus tarsi producing a dorsal foot mass, confirmed by ultrasound.
