Function & Actions

ActionsDilates the nostril — raises the alar rim; The dilator component of nasalis
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

In nasal fracture repair, the nasal musculature including the alar part is elevated from the bone during open reduction. Alar part reattachment after rhinoplasty affects nostril shape and competency.

Palpation

Active during forced nasal breathing — the nostril flares with alar part contraction.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Alar Part Malalignment in Rhinoplasty

Incorrectly repositioned alar part nasalis after open rhinoplasty producing asymmetric nostril flare requiring revision surgery.
