Ulnocarpal Joint Capsule

capsula articularis ulnocarpalis

The ulnocarpal joint capsule encloses the ulnocarpal articulation, reinforced by the TFCC (primarily its articular disc), the ulnotriquetral, and ulnolunate ligaments, providing the ulnar wrist constraint.

Region: Forearm
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses the ulnocarpal joint, contains the TFCC within its fibrous boundaries, and is reinforced by the extrinsic ulnocarpal ligaments that resist ulnar carpal migration.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Ulnocarpal capsular distension is the primary finding in ulnar wrist arthritis — diffuse capsular swelling without focal TFCC pathology indicates ulnocarpal synovitis or early radiocarpal-ulnocarpal arthritis. Arthroscopic synovectomy through the capsule addresses inflammatory ulnocarpal disease.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Ulnocarpal Synovitis

Inflammatory capsular thickening of the ulnocarpal joint producing diffuse ulnar wrist swelling and pain, managed by arthroscopic synovectomy and disease-modifying therapy in rheumatoid arthritis.
