Transverse Acetabular Ligament

ligamentum transversum acetabuli

The transverse acetabular ligament bridges the inferior acetabular notch, converting the bony notch into a foramen through which the acetabular vessels and ligamentum teres pass. It completes the inferior labral ring and anchors the inferior labrum. In hip arthroscopy, the transverse acetabular ligament is the reference point for anchor placement during inferior labral repair.

Region: Pelvis & Hip
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginOne horn of the acetabular notch (inferiorly)
InsertionOther horn of the acetabular notch — bridges the acetabular notch to complete the inferior socket
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsCompletes the inferior acetabular ring; supports the ligamentum teres origin; maintains the acetabular notch closed
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The transverse acetabular ligament is the floor of the hip joint and the reference point for all hip arthroscopy work — the 6 o'clock position is defined relative to this structure. In total hip arthroplasty, the correct acetabular cup orientation is guided by the transverse acetabular ligament alignment.
