Talocrural Joint Capsule

capsula articulationis talocruralis

The talocrural (ankle) joint capsule encloses the tibiotalar joint, reinforced by the deltoid ligament medially and the lateral ankle ligament complex laterally. The anterior capsule is the weakest region and is the site of anterior ankle impingement.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses the ankle joint, contains synovial fluid, is reinforced by the ankle ligaments, and is the structure that undergoes anterior impingement in equinus and post-traumatic ankle arthritis.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anterior ankle capsular impingement produces dorsiflexion-related pain in athletes. Arthroscopic anterior ankle debridement removes capsular fibrosis and osteophytes to restore dorsiflexion. Total ankle replacement requires capsular resection and ligament balancing.

Anterior Ankle Capsular Impingement in Athletes

Anterior talocrural capsule fibrosis producing dorsiflexion-related anterior ankle pain, treated by arthroscopic capsulectomy and osteophyte debridement.
