Synovial Plica of the TMJ

plica synovialis articulationis temporomandibularis

Synovial plicae of the TMJ are folds or fringes of synovial membrane within the upper and lower TMJ compartments, similar to knee joint plicae. They provide lubrication and may become symptomatic when inflamed or enlarged.

Region: Head & Skull
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provide synovial fluid distribution within the TMJ compartments, act as lubricating folds during condylar translation, and may impinge between the disc and condyle or disc and eminence during jaw movement.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Symptomatic TMJ synovial plicae produce clicking or catching during jaw movement that may be confused with disc displacement. Arthroscopic identification and resection of the plica resolves symptoms when confirmed as the pain source.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

TMJ Synovial Plica Impingement

Enlarged synovial fold impinging between joint surfaces during jaw movement producing mechanical clicking and pain, identified arthroscopically and treated by plica resection.
