Superficial Posterior Compartment Fascia

fascia compartimenti posterioris superficialis cruris

The superficial posterior compartment fascia encloses the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, separating them from the deep posterior compartment by the transverse crural septum.

Region: Lower Leg
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Contains the superficial posterior compartment muscles, separates them from the deep posterior compartment, and creates the potential space for haematoma and compartment syndrome within the calf.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Superficial posterior compartment syndrome from gastrocnemius-soleus injury or overuse produces calf swelling and pain with passive dorsiflexion. Fasciotomy of the superficial posterior compartment (combined with deep posterior and anterior compartments) is required in acute compartment syndrome.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Superficial Posterior Compartment Syndrome

Raised pressure in the gastrocnemius-soleus fascial compartment from muscle swelling or haematoma, requiring emergency fasciotomy combined with deep posterior compartment release.
