Superficial MCL Tibial Attachment

insertio tibialis superficialis ligamenti collateralis medialis

The tibial attachment of the superficial MCL inserts into the medial tibial metaphysis 4-6cm below the joint line — considerably more distal than the deep MCL tibial attachment.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides the distal tibial anchor of the primary valgus stabiliser. The broad distal attachment distributes valgus forces across the medial tibial metaphysis.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Pellegrini-Stieda calcification occurs at the femoral origin. The distal tibial attachment is involved in anteromedial tibial plateau fractures and requires specific fixation planning.

Superficial MCL Tibial Attachment in Tibial Plateau Fracture

Anteromedial plateau fractures may involve the superficial MCL tibial insertion requiring combined osseous and ligamentous fixation planning.
