Subtalar Joint Capsule (Complete)

capsula articulationis subtalaris completa

The complete subtalar joint capsule encloses all three subtalar joint facets (posterior, middle, and anterior), reinforced by the interosseous and cervical ligaments of the sinus tarsi, and the medial and lateral talocalcaneal ligaments.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides fibrous enclosure of the three subtalar facets, contains synovial fluid for lubrication of the hindfoot inversion-eversion motion, and is reinforced by the sinus tarsi ligaments for rotational stability.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Subtalar arthritis (from post-traumatic, rheumatoid, or primary osteoarthritis causes) produces hindfoot pain with uneven terrain walking. Subtalar fusion (arthrodesis) eliminates painful inversion-eversion motion and is the standard surgical treatment for end-stage subtalar arthritis.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Subtalar Arthritis Requiring Fusion

End-stage subtalar joint capsule and cartilage degeneration producing constant hindfoot pain on walking, managed by subtalar arthrodesis restoring pain-free ambulation at the expense of hindfoot motion.
