Short Plantar Ligament

ligamentum plantare breve

The short plantar ligament (plantar calcaneocuboid ligament) is a broad, short ligament connecting the anterior calcaneus to the cuboid, providing the primary stabilisation of the calcaneocuboid joint and supporting the lateral foot arch. It lies deep to the long plantar ligament. Its disruption in lateral column overloading contributes to lateral midfoot instability distinct from the medial arch collapse of spring ligament failure.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The short and long plantar ligaments together with the calcaneofibular ligament form the ligamentous stabilisers of the lateral ankle and hindfoot complex. Short plantar ligament tears are identified on MRI following calcaneocuboid joint injuries and in patients with inflammatory arthritis affecting the midfoot.

Short Plantar Ligament Sprain

Calcaneocuboid joint strain from lateral foot loading producing lateral midfoot pain managed conservatively with orthotic support.
