Posterior Lateral Meniscal Horn Attachment

insertio posterior cornus lateralis menisci

The posterior horn of the lateral meniscus attaches to the posterior intercondylar tibia with additional meniscofemoral ligament attachments, allowing greater translation than the medial meniscus.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Anchors the posterior lateral meniscal horn and permits the greater mobility of the lateral meniscus compared to the medial — approximately 10-11mm of anteroposterior translation.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Approximately 50% of acute ACL tears have concurrent lateral posterior horn tears. Root tears produce extrusion and rapid cartilage damage analogous to posterior medial root tears.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Posterior Horn Tear in ACL Injury

Concurrent posterior lateral horn tear in 50% of ACL ruptures, repaired during ACL reconstruction.

Lateral Meniscal Root Tear

Posterior lateral root avulsion producing extrusion and cartilage damage, requiring transtibial root repair.
