Plantar Aponeurosis Lateral Band

aponeurosis plantaris — fasciculus lateralis

The lateral band of the plantar aponeurosis runs along the lateral border of the plantar foot, reinforced by the plantar fascia and merging with the abductor digiti minimi fascia.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides lateral plantar foot protection and contributes to lateral arch support.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Lateral plantar fasciitis is less common than medial/central but produces lateral heel and plantar foot pain. Entrapment of Baxter's nerve (first branch of lateral plantar nerve) occurs between the lateral band and the calcaneus.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Plantar Fasciitis

Lateral band plantar fascia degeneration producing lateral heel and plantar foot pain, managed by lateral arch support and targeted injection.

Baxter's Nerve Entrapment at Lateral Band

First branch of the lateral plantar nerve compressed between the lateral plantar aponeurosis band and the calcaneus, released by lateral band fasciotomy.
