Inferior Peroneal Retinaculum

retinaculum musculorum fibularium inferius

The inferior peroneal retinaculum runs from the inferior extensor retinaculum to the lateral calcaneus, constraining the peroneal tendons as they curve around the peroneal trochlea.

Region: Lower Leg
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Maintains the peroneal tendons in their tunnels around the peroneal trochlea, preventing displacement during foot movement.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

A hypertrophied peroneal trochlea can compress the peroneal tendons within the inferior retinaculum tunnel producing tenosynovitis. Trochlea resection and retinaculum reconstruction addresses this impingement.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Peroneal Trochlea Hypertrophy Under Inferior Retinaculum

Enlarged peroneal trochlea compressing tendons in the inferior retinaculum tunnel, treated by trochlear resection.
