PCL Tibial Footprint

insertio tibialis ligamenti cruciati posterioris

The PCL tibial footprint is the attachment zone on the posterior intercondylar area of the tibial plateau, extending into a posterior tibial sulcus approximately 1-1.5 cm below the joint line. It is the deepest and most posterior of the cruciate attachments.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides the tibial anchor for the PCL, is the reference for tibial inlay PCL reconstruction technique (which restores the anatomic posterior tibial sulcus attachment), and determines the final PCL graft position.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

PCL reconstruction using the tibial inlay technique places a bone block directly into the posterior tibial sulcus at the native footprint, avoiding the sharp angle of the transtibial tunnel that can abrade the graft. The tibial inlay technique has a lower graft failure rate than the transtibial technique in some series.

PCL Tibial Inlay Reconstruction at Native Footprint

Bone block placement into the posterior tibial sulcus at the anatomic PCL tibial footprint, avoiding the killer turn of the transtibial technique and reducing graft abrasion in PCL reconstruction.
