Mid-Third Lateral Capsular Ligament

capsula articularis genus lateralis — pars media

The mid-third lateral capsular ligament is the fibrous capsule between the lateral meniscus and the lateral tibial rim, distinct from the posterolateral corner structures. It provides the mid-lateral knee capsular stability.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides lateral capsular constraint in the mid-lateral zone, tethers the lateral meniscus peripherally to the joint line, and is the structure avulsed in the Segond fracture pattern.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The mid-third lateral capsule is part of the anterolateral complex (ALC) that also includes the anterolateral ligament. Combined mid-third lateral capsule and ALL injury produces pronounced anterolateral rotatory instability. Assessment of the mid-third capsule is included in comprehensive lateral knee ligament evaluation.

Mid-Third Lateral Capsule in Anterolateral Instability

Mid-third lateral capsular ligament injury as part of the anterolateral complex disruption producing pivot shift instability, addressed by ALL reconstruction combined with ACL reconstruction.
