MCP Ulnar Collateral Ligament (Index)

ligamentum collaterale ulnare articulationis metacarpophalangealis indicis

The ulnar collateral ligament of the index finger MCP joint connects the ulnar metacarpal head to the ulnar base of the proximal phalanx, providing ulnar constraint to the index MCP joint.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Resists radial deviation forces at the index MCP joint, prevents radial subluxation during lateral pinch, and is the ligament assessed in index MCP joint instability after trauma.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Index MCP ulnar collateral ligament injury is less common than UCL injuries of the thumb MCP but produces index finger instability to radial stress. Combined index MCP radial and ulnar instability indicates a global capsular disruption requiring surgical repair.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Index MCP UCL Sprain

Acute ulnar collateral ligament sprain of the index MCP from radial deviation force, managed by radial buddy taping and protected mobilisation.
