Lateral Sacrococcygeal Ligament

ligamentum sacrococcygeum laterale

The lateral sacrococcygeal ligaments connect the lateral processes of the sacrum to the transverse processes of the coccyx, forming the lateral reinforcement of the sacrococcygeal joint.

Region: Lower Back
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Resist lateral coccygeal deviation, provide lateral stabilisation of the sacrococcygeal junction, and complete the three-dimensional constraint of the coccyx.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Asymmetric lateral sacrococcygeal ligament injury from a lateral fall onto the coccyx produces lateral deviation of the coccyx visible on AP pelvic X-ray. Injection targeting the lateral ligament complex addresses lateral coccydynia.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Coccyx Deviation from Asymmetric Ligament Injury

Lateral coccygeal deviation visible on AP X-ray from asymmetric lateral sacrococcygeal ligament injury, producing pain on sitting reproduced by lateral coccygeal palpation.
