Lateral Meniscal Peripheral Attachment

insertio peripherica menisci lateralis

The peripheral attachment of the lateral meniscus is loosely connected to the lateral capsule with a hiatus at the popliteal hiatus, allowing 10-11mm of AP translation.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Allows greater lateral meniscal mobility accommodating tibial rotation on the lateral plateau. The popliteal hiatus is the normal gap for the popliteus tendon.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The popliteal hiatus must not be confused with a peripheral tear during arthroscopy. Loose peripheral attachment allows bucket handle configuration after smaller tears than the medial meniscus requires.

Popliteal Hiatus Recognition in Arthroscopy

The normal gap in the lateral peripheral attachment must be identified to avoid misdiagnosis as a peripheral tear.
