Lateral Intermuscular Septum Detail

septum intermusculare laterale femoris detail

The lateral intermuscular septum runs from the inner fascia lata to the lateral femoral linea aspera, separating the anterior (quadriceps) from the posterior (hamstring) compartment laterally.

Region: Thigh
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides the lateral fascial boundary between anterior and posterior thigh compartments and transmits perforating branches of the profunda femoris.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The septum is divided during lateral femoral approaches for fracture fixation. Perforating vessels through it must be controlled to prevent haematoma.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Division of the lateral intermuscular septum during lateral femoral shaft approach for ORIF, with control of perforating vessels.
