Interclavicular Ligament Detail

ligamentum interclaviculare detail

The interclavicular ligament connects the two sternal ends of the clavicles across the superior margin of the manubrium, providing a transverse ligamentous bridge between the two sternoclavicular joints.

Region: Chest
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Limits superior clavicular displacement bilaterally, provides the superior sternal ligamentous reinforcement, and stabilises both SC joints through its transverse connection.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The interclavicular ligament is divided during superior mediastinal access and during bilateral SC joint surgery. Its transverse connection means that unilateral SC joint dislocation puts tension on the contralateral SC joint through this ligament.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Interclavicular Ligament Division in Sternal Approach

Division of the interclavicular ligament during median sternotomy extension to the SC joints for proximal aortic surgery or bilateral first rib resection.
