Inferior Glenohumeral Ligament

ligamentum glenohumerale inferius

The inferior glenohumeral ligament is the most important shoulder ligament for anterior stability, forming a hammock of anterior band, axillary pouch, and posterior band under the humeral head in the abduction-external rotation position. The anterior band is the structure torn from the glenoid (Bankart lesion) in anterior shoulder dislocation and repaired in Bankart surgery.

Region: Shoulder
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginInferior glenoid labrum from the 2 to 8 o'clock position
InsertionInferior humeral neck below the lesser and greater tubercles
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsPrimary restraint against anterior shoulder dislocation in the abducted and externally rotated position; forms a hammock under the humeral head
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The IGHL anterior band Bankart repair reattaches the torn ligament to the glenoid rim using suture anchors. Failure of repair from overtightening produces posterior shoulder capsule tightness contributing to posterior impingement and SLAP tears in throwers.

Bankart Lesion

IGHL anterior band avulsion from the glenoid labrum in shoulder dislocation managed with arthroscopic suture anchor repair.
