Hip Labrum (Anterior)

labrum acetabuli anterius

The anterior acetabular labrum is the fibrocartilaginous rim on the anterior acetabular margin, providing anterior coverage of the femoral head and the attachment for the anterior joint capsule.

Region: Pelvis & Hip
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Deepens the anterior acetabular socket by approximately 30%, provides anterior femoral head containment during hip flexion and internal rotation, and seals the joint fluid for lubrication through the suction mechanism.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anterior labral tears are the most common hip labral pathology, occurring from femoroacetabular impingement (pincer or combined type). The cam impingement mechanism creates anterior labral tear from shear during hip flexion-internal rotation. Hip arthroscopy with labral repair or reconstruction is the standard surgical treatment.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Anterior Hip Labral Tear in FAI

Anterior labral tear from femoroacetabular impingement producing anterior groin pain with flexion and internal rotation, repaired arthroscopically with suture anchors in cam and combined FAI patterns.

Anterior Labral Detachment in Developmental Dysplasia

Labral ossification and detachment in developmental hip dysplasia from rim overloading, addressed by periacetabular osteotomy to redirect the acetabulum and relieve labral stress.
