Hip Retinacular Fibres (Anterior)

fibrae retinaculi capitis femoris anteriores

The anterior retinacular fibres run along the anterior femoral neck, transmitting the lateral epiphyseal vessels from the lateral circumflex femoral artery to the anterosuperior femoral head.

Region: Thigh
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Transmit the lateral circumflex femoral arterial branches along the anterior femoral neck, contributing to femoral head blood supply supplementary to the dominant posterior retinacular vessels.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

In Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, the anterolateral femoral head blood supply (carried by the anterior retinacular fibres) is selectively compromised, producing the characteristic anterolateral femoral head collapse. Containment treatment (bracing or pelvic osteotomy) protects the remaining viable femoral head.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease from Anterior Retinacular Disruption

Childhood femoral head avascular necrosis from loss of the anterior retinacular vessel supply producing anterolateral femoral head collapse, managed by containment to promote spherical femoral head remodelling.
