Hamatometacarpal Ligament

ligamentum hamato-metacarpale

The hamatometacarpal ligaments connect the hamate to the fourth and fifth metacarpal bases, providing the ligamentous constraint of the ring and little finger CMC joints.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Stabilises the fourth and fifth CMC joints against subluxation and dislocation, particularly during axial loading of the ring and little finger metacarpals in power fist impact.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Hamatometacarpal joint fracture-dislocations from punch mechanisms injure these ligaments, producing the "fight bite" equivalent injury pattern. ORIF with K-wire or screw fixation restores CMC alignment and ligamentous tension.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Fourth and Fifth CMC Fracture-Dislocation

Hamatometacarpal ligament disruption in punch mechanism injuries producing ring and little CMC dislocation, requiring ORIF and ligamentous repair for stable reduction.
