Glenohumeral Axillary Pouch

recessus axillaris capsulae glenohumeralis

The axillary pouch is the inferior redundant fold of the glenohumeral capsule between the humeral neck and the glenoid inferior pole, allowing full shoulder abduction. It is reinforced by the inferior glenohumeral ligament.

Region: Shoulder
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Allows full shoulder abduction by providing the necessary capsular slack in the adducted position, is the site of maximum capsular volume reduction in frozen shoulder, and forms the inferior limit of the joint accessible to inferior glenohumeral ligament.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The axillary pouch contracts in frozen shoulder — its loss is responsible for the abduction restriction characteristic of adhesive capsulitis. Arthroscopic inferior capsular release targets the axillary pouch to restore abduction.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Axillary Pouch Contracture in Frozen Shoulder

Fibrous contracture of the axillary pouch producing abduction restriction as the dominant motion loss in advanced adhesive capsulitis, released arthroscopically to restore overhead function.
