Proximal Radioulnar Joint Capsule

capsula articulationis radioulnaris proximalis

The proximal radioulnar joint (PRUJ) capsule encloses the articulation between the radial head and the radial notch of the ulna, shared with the elbow joint capsule and reinforced by the annular ligament.

Region: Upper Arm
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Contains the proximal radioulnar articulation, allows radial head rotation within the radial notch, and is disrupted in radial head fractures and elbow dislocations that involve the proximal radioulnar joint.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

PRUJ capsular disruption accompanying radial head fractures requires assessment of associated ligamentous injury. In radial head fractures with PRUJ capsular involvement and medial collateral ligament injury, simple radial head excision without replacement leads to valgus instability.

PRUJ Capsule Assessment in Radial Head Fracture

Proximal radioulnar joint capsular integrity assessed after radial head fracture — combined PRUJ and MCL disruption mandates radial head arthroplasty rather than excision to maintain elbow stability.
