Fibular Collateral Ligament Detail

ligamentum collaterale fibulare detail

The fibular collateral ligament (LCL) connects the lateral femoral epicondyle to the fibular head as the primary static lateral stabiliser against varus stress.

Region: Knee
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Primary restraint against varus stress at 30 degrees flexion, contributes to external rotation control, and is the lateral component of the PLC complex.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Isolated FCL tears are uncommon — usually part of PLC injury with popliteofibular ligament and popliteus tendon. Figure-four position maximally tenses the FCL for varus stress testing.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

FCL Tear in Posterolateral Corner Injury

FCL disruption as part of PLC injury producing varus instability and external rotation laxity, repaired acutely or reconstructed chronically.

Isolated FCL Reconstruction

Fibular head to lateral epicondyle graft for isolated FCL insufficiency.
