Elbow Ulnohumeral Capsule

capsula articulationis cubiti — pars ulnohumeralis

The ulnohumeral joint capsule is the fibrous sleeve of the trochlea-trochlear notch articulation, the primary hinge joint of the elbow. The anterior and posterior capsular condensations provide the anterior and posterior elbow constraints.

Region: Upper Arm
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Contains the elbow joint, provides the fibrous constraint of the hinge articulation, and is the structure contracted in post-traumatic elbow flexion contracture.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Elbow contracture (most commonly from post-traumatic fibrosis) involves the anterior and posterior capsules. The anterior capsule contracts in extension contractures (inability to flex) and the posterior capsule contracts in flexion contractures (inability to extend). Arthroscopic or open capsular release addresses post-traumatic elbow stiffness.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Elbow Contracture Release

Arthroscopic or open release of the anterior capsule (for extension contracture) and/or posterior capsule (for flexion contracture) in post-traumatic elbow stiffness, restoring functional range of motion.
