Dorsal Capitohamate Ligament

ligamentum capitohamatum dorsale

The dorsal capitohamate ligament connects the dorsal surfaces of the capitate and hamate, stabilising the capitohamate articulation — the junction between the central and ulnar columns of the wrist.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Resists relative dorsal displacement between the capitate and hamate, maintains the capitohamate joint alignment, and is assessed in midcarpal instability evaluation.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The capitohamate joint is a common site of midcarpal arthrosis — a separate degenerative process from radiocarpal arthritis. Capitohamate fusion is included in limited wrist fusions for midcarpal arthritis or instability without radial involvement.

Capitohamate Arthritis in Midcarpal Instability

Degenerative joint disease at the capitohamate articulation from chronic midcarpal instability, addressed by capitohamate fusion as part of partial wrist arthrodesis.
