The crural fascia is the deep fascia enclosing the leg, forming the anterior, posterior, peroneal, and deep posterior compartments with their intermuscular septa. It is continuous superiorly with the fascia lata and inferiorly with the extensor and flexor retinacula.
Encloses the four leg compartments maintaining muscle pressure, provides origin for the peroneal muscles, and creates the intermuscular septa that divide the compartments relevant in compartment syndrome.
Acute leg compartment syndrome from tibial fracture, reperfusion, or exercise produces raised compartment pressure requiring four-compartment fasciotomy through medial and lateral incisions.
Raised pressure in one or more of the four leg compartments after fracture or vascular injury requiring emergency four-compartment fasciotomy.
