Dorsal Wrist Capsule Bursa

bursa capsulae carpalis dorsalis

A small bursa between the dorsal wrist capsule and the overlying extensor tendons, reducing friction as the tendons glide over the radiocarpal joint capsule. It may develop from ganglion degeneration of the dorsal capsule, the most common site for wrist ganglion formation.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The dorsal wrist capsule is the origin site of approximately 60-70% of wrist ganglia, where degeneration of the scapholunate ligament-capsule complex produces a one-way valve that allows synovial fluid accumulation. Dorsal wrist capsule bursitis contributes to dorsal wrist pain with extension loading. Aspiration and injection may provide temporary relief but surgical excision of the capsular root is required for definitive ganglion treatment.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Dorsal Wrist Ganglion

Cystic degeneration of the dorsal wrist capsule producing a visible and palpable dorsal wrist mass, most commonly arising from the scapholunate interval, managed by aspiration or surgical excision including the capsular root.
