Thumb IP Joint Dorsal Bursa

bursa dorsalis articuli interphalangealis pollicis

A small dorsal bursa over the thumb interphalangeal joint between the EPL tendon and the IP joint capsule, reducing friction during thumb IP flexion and extension. It may become inflamed in de Quervain syndrome and after thumb IP hyperextension injuries.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Thumb IP joint bursitis contributes to dorsal thumb tip pain with EPL activation. Ganglion cysts arising from the thumb IP joint capsule may simulate bursitis. In EPL rupture repair using EIP transfer, the EIP tendon is routed to the IP joint level, passing through this bursal region.
