Subtendinous Prepatellar Bursa

bursa subtendinea praepatellaris

The subtendinous prepatellar bursa is the deepest and least constant of the three prepatellar bursae. It lies directly on the anterior surface of the patella, beneath the fibres of the quadriceps tendon that continue over the bone into the patellar ligament.

Anatomical Data

Location

LocationOn the front of the patella, between the fibres of the quadriceps tendon passing over the patella and the patellar periosteum

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Reduces friction between the quadriceps tendon fibres and the anterior surface of the patella

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

This bursa is seldom clinically significant on its own but may be involved in deep or extensive prepatellar bursitis. Its position on the bone surface is relevant when distinguishing bursal fluid from patellar or tendon pathology on imaging.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Subtendinous Prepatellar Bursitis

Uncommon inflammation of the deepest prepatellar bursa causing anterior patellar pain and swelling, usually alongside involvement of the more superficial prepatellar bursae.
