An inconstant subcutaneous bursa in the submental region between the chin skin and the underlying mentalis muscle or mandibular symphysis. It may develop from repeated chin contact in combat sports or from chronic pressure in heavy-set individuals.
Submental bursitis produces a soft midline chin swelling that must be distinguished from a dermoid cyst, thyroglossal duct remnant, and enlarged submental lymph nodes. Ultrasound demonstrates a thin-walled, anechoic structure without internal vascularity. It is occasionally encountered in judo and wrestling athletes from mat contact.
Subcutaneous bursal swelling under the chin from contact sport chin trauma, presenting as a midline fluctuant lump confirmed by ultrasound as distinct from lymphadenopathy or cystic neck lesions.
