A subcutaneous bursa overlying the manubrium or body of the sternum, developing in response to chronic external pressure from harnesses, seat belts, or protective equipment. The sternum's superficial position makes it susceptible to friction-related bursal formation.
Common in cyclists (from a dropped handlebar position), motorcyclists, and horse riders from saddle chest contact. Presents as a painless or mildly tender swelling over the sternum. Infection of a sternal bursa following cardiac surgery is a recognised complication requiring surgical debridement.
Subcutaneous bursal swelling from repetitive external compression over the sternum, common in cyclists and contact sport athletes, usually treated with pressure relief and aspiration.
