Subcutaneous Anterior Tibial Bursa

bursa subcutanea tibiae anterior

A subcutaneous bursa overlying the anterior tibial crest and tibial shaft, where the bone lies immediately beneath the skin without muscular padding. It develops in response to repetitive pressure from footwear, shin guards, or kneeling on hard surfaces.

Region: Lower Leg
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Common in athletes who wear tight shin guards (football, hockey, cricket) and in occupations requiring prolonged kneeling. Presents as a soft, fluctuant swelling directly over the tibial shaft. Aspiration and padding typically resolve the condition; chronic cases may require surgical excision.
