A deep bursa between the inferior attachment of the sternocleidomastoid and the underlying sternoclavicular joint or clavicle, reducing friction during SCM contraction. It may communicate with the sternoclavicular joint cavity in some individuals.
Inflammation of the SCM deep bursa contributes to anterior neck and sternoclavicular pain in patients with repeated cervical rotation loading. It is differentiated from SCM tendinopathy by its location deep to the tendinous insertion. Steroid injection at the sternoclavicular level addresses both structures simultaneously.
Bursal inflammation between the SCM and the clavicle producing anterior neck pain at the sternoclavicular level, worsened by neck rotation and direct palpation at the SCM origin.
