Soleus Arcuate Bursa

bursa arcuata solei

A small bursa at the arcuate origin of the soleus, between the muscle and the posterior head of the fibula or upper tibia. The soleus arises via a tendinous arch between the tibia and fibula, and this bursa reduces friction at its fibular attachment.

Region: Lower Leg

Clinical Notes

Soleus arcuate bursitis presents as deep proximal calf pain that worsens with plantarflexion under load. It is encountered in distance runners and military recruits with high training loads. Isolated soleal bursitis is rare and imaging is required to distinguish it from a soleus muscle tear or deep vein thrombosis.
