Small bursae along the round ligament of the uterus within the inguinal canal, reducing friction as the ligament moves with uterine position changes during pregnancy and with body movement. They may become symptomatic during pregnancy when the round ligament undergoes increased tension.
Round ligament bursitis is a recognised cause of groin pain in pregnancy, producing sharp unilateral groin or labial pain with sudden position change (round ligament syndrome). A bursitis component may contribute to the inflammatory nature of the pain. It is distinguished from inguinal hernia by the absence of a reducible mass. Management is conservative with rest and support.
