Rectus Femoris Mid-Thigh Bursa

An inconstant bursa found between the rectus femoris muscle belly and the underlying vastus intermedius in the mid-thigh. It provides a gliding surface between these two components of the quadriceps during knee extension.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Rarely clinically significant but can develop post-traumatic bursitis following direct quadriceps contusion in contact sports. Persistent fluid accumulation may mimic a soft tissue tumour on imaging, requiring clinical correlation.

Post-traumatic bursal fluid accumulation between rectus femoris and vastus intermedius following a direct thigh blow, distinguishable from a haematoma by its thin-walled, anechoic appearance on ultrasound.
